THE NEWS FRAME : a theory of media news

     This is a picture frame.

What ever i put in that frame is what i want you to see.I change what i put in the frame all the time.

What ever i leave out of the frame you don’t see or you don’t focus on. I choose what i consider important to place in this frame. I call what ever i place in the frame THE NEWS. From time you will check what is in the frame to get your NEWS UPDATE. 

There are millions of things happening on earth that could go into this frame but only selected events go in. The things left outside of the frame are not the NEWS. They are real events but not the news.

Using this analogy we can see that when we replace the FRAME with the NEWS MEDIUM be it a newspaper, a radio, a tv or a computer screen the NEWS is simply an event that we are collectively focussed on within the frame.


Three points here that will lead us into NEWS part 2

· THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF MEDIA FRAMES ALL FOCUSSED ON DIFFERENT EVENTS THERE BY MAKING THESE EVENTS INTO NEWS

· WHEN DIFFERENT FRAMES ARE FOCUSSED ON THE SAME THING THEY WILL PORTRAY THE NEWS EVENT IN A NEW WAY, THEY WILL TELL THE NEWS DIFFERENTLY 

· THE AUDIENCE VIEWING THE NEWS IS CONSUMING A MEDIA PRODUCT
